When Glasgow City Council wanted to improve its online services and e-government portfolio they turned to DA Group's Ability service.
The council needed a new website for learning disabled people which would provide a safe portal for youngsters on the web. The idea was to create a community site where young people could come online to chat with friends and discuss everyday things like their favourite pop group in a low risk environment. The site would also need to be a resource for carers giving details of learning disabled centres and emergency contact numbers.
This meant the task was not as simple as designing a straightforward website for children. The site needed to be safe, secure and legible to learning disabled people whilst also maintaining its usefulness for their older carers. To do this DA Group worked closely with the council and learning disabled people themselves to design a site that would provide an important tool for all.
DA Group managed to deliver all of the above; the site features a mix of symbols and pictures to help explain the content of the page whilst keeping a minimalist aspect to prevent any confusion from flashing banners and links. Users can even listen to the content of some pages if necessary. As a result of this success, DA Group has been contracted to continue developing the site along with several other projects.
